Job description

Location:
Renningen, BW, Germany
Work arrangement:
On-site

Role Summary

Leakage is one of the important technological challenges in mechanical systems and affects various fluids - from water and lubricants to pressurized H₂. In this thesis, our goal is to model the leakage caused by rough contact of an elastomer against steel in a static, elastic state. The challenge is that roughness has a multiscale nature, ranging from micrometers to nanometers, and leakage can occur at different scales. For this purpose, there are a number of methods and theories in the literature for calculating leakage. During your thesis, you will create an overview of the existing models and implement the model most suitable for industrial applications. You will then compare the model with the company's in-house contact mechanics tools as well as analytical multiscale equations from engineering applications. Finally, you will derive surrogate or metamodels to predict leakage based on simulation data using simplified equations.
