Role Summary
The Quality function at Smiths Interconnect is responsible for the operations and production of goods while achieving speed, quality and cost objectives. The Quality Control Technician supports quality control and assurance activities to ensure that products meet internal requirements, customer requirements and regulatory requirements.
Solid knowledge of
PCB manufacturing and PCBA assembly processes (SMT and through-hole components).
RF components and considerations associated with high frequency products.
Electronic systems and circuit operation.
Understanding of
AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality systems.
IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
The interpretation of geometric and dimensional tolerances (GD&T).
Ability to
Apply technical expertise to complex quality issues.
Work independently and resourcefully in ambiguous situations.
Demonstrate high attention to detail and accuracy of inspections.
Take full responsibility for product quality and conformity.

Health, safety and environmental requirements
On-site manufacturing and laboratory environment.
Long periods of visual inspection and precision work.
Handling of delicate and high value components.
Follow cleanroom clothing protocols (full suits, masks and gloves) and maintain a clean and organized inspection area.
Comply with Quebec regulations on occupational health and safety, company safety policies and procedures aligned with ISO standards.
Follow safe handling and storage requirements for sensitive, delicate or controlled products.
Comply with environmental and waste management procedures related to inspection, testing and packaging activities.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time, a minimum of 2 hours.
Must be able to circulate in all areas of the office.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, turn and grasp objects at work station.
Must possess the manual dexterity and coordination necessary to operate office equipment.
Must be able to adapt to changing priorities and successfully complete tasks despite frequent interruptions.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand French and English.
Must be able to respond to visual and auditory cues.
Perform all tasks in a safe manner and adhere to all safety requirements in support of company objectives.
Follow the manual lifting guidelines outlined in the safety manual.
Comply with all environmental requirements to support the company's environmental performance objectives.
Complete and actively participate in all other required environmental, health and safety (ESS) training.
The work environment is generally located in a Smiths facility during normal or extended operating hours, including offices, manufacturing plants and repair centers. The work environment may also include customer sites, including oil well sites and meeting locations. Noise levels are generally high and approved personal protective equipment (PPE) is required on the production floor.
Responsibilities
- Perform incoming inspection of raw materials, PCBs, PCBAs and RF components in accordance with specifications and quality requirements.
- Perform in-process inspections and final inspections ensuring compliance with engineering drawings, procedures and customer specifications.
- Carry out First Article Inspections (FAI) in accordance with AS9102 and support Customer Source Inspections (CSI).
- Perform detailed visual inspections using microscopes and precision measuring tools in accordance with IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
- Handle and test highly sensitive microelectronic and RF components, respecting ESD and handling protocols.
- Accurately collect, record and maintain inspection and testing data in quality systems (ERP/MES).
- Prepare certificates of conformity (CoC) and quality documentation required by customers.
- Maintain product traceability and serialization records in accordance with AS9100 requirements.
- Follow documented procedures for data collection, monitoring and retention.
- Identify, document and isolate non-compliant materials and products.
- Initiate and support Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) and Corrective Actions (CAR).
- Participate in root cause investigations and verification of corrective actions.
- Support the activities of the Material Review Board (MRB), as required.
- Participate in resolving problems related to the quality of materials received and suppliers.
- Support internal and external audits by providing required inspection records and objective evidence.
- Contribute to contract review activities related to quality requirements.
- Perform minor mechanical assembly, labeling and final packaging as required.
- Prepare finished products for transfer to stores or shipping.
- Support the achievement of daily and weekly production and shipping goals.
- Ensure compliance with the AS9100 / ISO 9001 quality management system as well as EHS and safety requirements.
- Follow ESD practices and handling procedures specific to sensitive electronic components.
- Act as a technical resource person for less experienced inspectors and encourage knowledge sharing within the team.
- Perform any other task related to assigned quality.
- Support the training of new inspectors.
- Provide feedback to engineering regarding quality risks.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean / Kaizen).
Requirements
- Professional or technical certification in electronics or quality. Required.
- Advanced technical certifications. Favorites.
- Experience in internal audits, an asset.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in the PCB/PCBA, microelectronics or RF manufacturing industries in an AS9100 environment.
- Ability to travel within Canada and internationally: less than 10%.
