Role Summary

Uber is looking for a Senior Manager, State and Local Income / Franchise Tax to join our Tax team. This role will lead Uber's US state and local income/franchise tax function, with responsibility for tax provision, planning, M&A advisory, controversy, compliance advice, and process improvement.

This is a high-impact role for someone who brings deep multistate tax technical expertise, strong judgment, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, complex business environment. You will partner closely with multiple teams at Uber (including US indirect tax team), both within and outside the Tax team, and external advisors to manage risk, support business objectives, and drive scalable tax processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the state income tax provision process under ASC 740, including current and deferred tax calculations, valuation allowance analysis, uncertain tax positions, and audit-ready documentation.
  • Identify and execute state tax planning opportunities related to both the recurring business operations and the new business initiatives such a M&A and new products.
  • Partner with the Tax Controversy team to manage state and local tax controversies, including developing audit strategies and working with the compliance and operational teams to manage the volume and drive practical resolution.
  • Advise Uber's tax compliance team in India, including tax technical guidance, review of workpapers and tax returns.
  • Monitor state and local legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments; assess potential impacts to Uber and communicate risks, opportunities, and recommendations to leadership.
  • Evaluate the state tax impact of new products, business models, transactions, and operational changes.
  • Identify and drive opportunities for process improvements and automation to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Manage external service providers and ensure high-quality, timely delivery.
  • Mentor and develop team members, helping build a technical, high performing and collaborative SALT function.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive tax experience with deep knowledge in US state and local income/franchise tax.
  • Passion for AI, automation, and process improvement. Mindset to challenge the status quo rather than "this is how we've always done it."
  • Experience preparing technical memos and communicating complex tax issues clearly to both tax and non-tax stakeholders.
  • For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $182,000 per year - USD $202,000 per year.
  • For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
