Role Summary

Rhino + Jetty is making housing more affordable and accessible for millions of renters each year. We're the market-leading rental housing platform building simpler, more accessible ways for people to move into homes — and for property managers to lease with confidence.

Our technology removes friction from the move-in process, lowers upfront costs for renters, and helps property managers make faster, more accurate decisions. We support a network of 3 million rental units nationwide and work with 47 of the NMHC Top 100 property owners, including Greystar, Brookfield, Asset Living, UDR, and more.

We pioneered security deposit insurance and continue to push the industry forward with a growing suite of products — from deposit management to lease guarantees and loss-of-employment protection. We're growing quickly, tackling real problems at scale, and building technology that's changing how renting works.

We're looking for a Senior Accountant to play a key role in our monthly close, reporting, and accounting operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Accounting, you'll own meaningful areas of the general ledger, help strengthen processes and controls as we scale, and mentor junior team members. This is a great role for someone who wants broad exposure across a fast-growing fintech/insurtech business — including the interesting accounting that comes with insurance products, premiums, and claims.

Responsibilities

  • Own significant components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with US GAAP

Handle complex accounting areas such as revenue recognition (ASC 606), prepaid/accrued expenses, equity, and insurance-related balances (e.g., premiums receivable, claims reserves, carrier settlements, carrier payables, and fiduciary assets/liabilities) across multiple carrier programs while serving as the primary finance liaison to insurance operations and actuarial teams.

Participate in strategic growth projects including system implementations and standardizing core accounting processes across expanding business lines.

  • Support the annual audit and tax filings: prepare PBC schedules, respond to auditor requests, and coordinate with external accountants
  • Reconcile high-volume transaction data between operational systems, payment processors, and the general ledger
  • Identify and drive process improvements, automation, and documentation of accounting policies and internal controls
  • Assist with cash management, treasury reconciliations, and intercompany accounting
  • Review work of and mentor staff accountants; act as a go-to resource for accounting questions across the team
  • Partner with FP&A, RevOps, and business teams on flux analysis, reporting, and ad hoc projects

Requirements

  • 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience; a mix of public accounting and in-house experience strongly preferred
  • CPA or active CPA candidate strongly preferred
  • Strong command of US GAAP; hands-on experience with month-end close and financial statement preparation
  • Experience at a high-growth startup, fintech, or insurance business a plus — especially with high-volume transactional data
  • Proficiency with a modern ERP/GL (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct) and advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and reconciliation skills; you find the discrepancy and fix the root cause
  • Self-starter who thrives with ownership and ambiguity; comfortable improving processes, not just running them
  • Clear communicator who can work cross-functionally and explain accounting concepts to non-accountants
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

Nice to Have

  • Insurance or statutory accounting exposure (premium accounting, claims, carrier/MGA relationships)
  • Experience with billing/payments platforms (e.g., Stripe) and data tools (SQL a plus)
  • Experience supporting a first-time audit or building close processes from scratch

Base Salary Range: $90,000-$115,000

  • Rhino + Jetty has partnered with a number of compensation benchmarking tools to determine competitive and fair market pay bands for our size and stage. Our goal is to ensure each employee is paid equitably and competitively while also maintaining a consistent and standardized methodology.

  • Base salary is just one part of our Total Rewards Package here at R + J. In connection with this position, we also offer:
  • Competitive cash compensation package including base salary, milestone based bonus, and other financial perks
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage (up to 90% employer contribution) - eligible from your start date

  • Stock option plan to give our employees a direct stake in R + J’s success
  • Remote-first work culture with opportunities to collaborate as a team in person
  • Monthly lifestyle stipend to fit your needs (meals, wellness, co-working)
