Role Summary

Day shift from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Sunday, every other week.

25 per hour, plus a bonus of $0.50 after 6 months and after 12 months.

The Sample Preparation Technician is responsible for performing the routine sorting, transferring, drying, crushing, pulverizing and sieving of geological materials in accordance with client work orders and laboratory quality guidelines and procedures.

Unpack, sort, transfer and dry samples.

Execute and perform crushing, pulverization and screening of geological materials in accordance with SGS standard operating procedures.

Perform routine quality checks, including analysis of particle size, dust loss, and report data immediately to supervisor or group leader if results do not meet expectations.

Ensure work order documents are complete in all respects and quality control results are entered into the SLIMS system, as applicable.

Keep the work area clean and organized, and ensure that spills are cleaned up immediately. Disposal of materials is done according to laboratory procedures and any special requirements regarding international soil handling.

Ensure that equipment is well maintained and notify the supervisor or group leader of any damage, defective equipment or any adjustments to be made to the equipment (e.g.: time required for pulverization, jaw gap of the crusher).

Responsible for maintaining records and documents, including records relating to work orders and equipment maintenance.

The person holding this position may be called upon to work in other sections of the geochemistry laboratory as needed.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma.
  • Experience: 0 to 1 year of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience obtained through training.
  • Specific technical skills
  • Excellent analytical and mechanical skills.
  • Ability to perform routine bench testing.
  • A willingness to learn new tests, new instruments and new analytical procedures.
  • Be able to read, understand and follow work instructions while respecting safety instructions precisely and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a group situation and independently.
  • Have proven time management skills and have attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Extended working hours and shift work may be necessary on occasion.
  • Travel to other SGS or customer sites may be expected on occasion.
