As a member of Vapor Rail, a division of Wabtec Canada Inc., the incumbent will be responsible for technical leadership, execution of electromechanical engineering projects and R&D projects. This role includes the adaptation of existing products, covering the entire project life cycle, from the initial design phase to commissioning.

The incumbent ensures technical coordination of design and testing, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, applicable quality standards, budgetary constraints and established deadlines.

He also acts as a technical reference to cross-functional functions, including purchasing, quality, production and the methods group, in order to ensure efficient and compliant execution of projects. All of these responsibilities are exercised under the supervision of the manager of door mechanisms, peripherals and tests.

Who will you work with?

The Door Actuators, Peripherals and Test team specializes in the design, adaptation, prototyping, testing and validation of complex electromechanical products; for OEM and service contracts with the most renowned railway manufacturers. This is a technical team with extensive knowledge that is versatile, dynamic, flexible and constantly looking for new ideas.

In this role, you will interact daily with the Systems Engineer throughout the project development process. You will work closely with the quality department when resolving technical issues, as well as with the methods department to ensure efficient production. You will also work in partnership with other key stakeholders to support our clients and optimize their operations.

Who will you be working with?

The Door Actuators, Peripherals and Test team specializes in the design, adaptation, prototyping, testing, and validation of complex electromechanical products for OEM and service contracts with some of the most renowned railway manufacturers. This is a highly skilled technical team that is versatile, dynamic, flexible, and constantly seeking new ideas.

In this role, you will interact daily with the systems engineer throughout the entire project development process. You will work closely with the Quality department to resolve technical issues, as well as with the methods department to ensure efficient production ramp-up. You will also collaborate with other key stakeholders to support our customers and optimize their operations.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of Vapor Rail, a division of Wabtec Canada Inc., the position holder will be responsible for technical leadership and for the execution of electromechanical engineering projects and R&D initiatives. This role notably includes the adaptation of existing products, covering the entire project lifecycle from the initial design phase through to commissioning.

The position holder ensures the technical coordination of design and testing activities, while ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, applicable quality standards, budget constraints, and established schedules.

He or she also serves as a technical reference for cross-functional teams, including Purchasing, Quality, Production, and the Methods group, to ensure efficient and compliant project execution. All these responsibilities are carried out under the supervision of the Manager, Door Mechanisms, Peripherals, and Test.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Analysis of customer specifications and railway standards. Development of requirement matrices and requirements management.
  • Facilitation of creative workshops and design reviews, and structuring of technical decisions.
  • 3D design (SolidWorks) of mechanical mechanisms and integration of electrical harnesses, with support from a designer.
  • Calculation and selection of motors, solenoids, and electrical components, with support from the electrical engineer and senior electrical designer.
  • Engineering calculations and analyses: statics and dynamics (free body diagrams), strength of materials, finite element analysis (FEA), statistical tolerance stack-ups, tightening torques, sizing of springs and machine elements, DFMEA, etc.
  • Participation in 2D drawing preparation (GD&T) and verification of drawings produced by the mechanical drafter.
  • Preparation of documentation: design reports, calculation notes, test procedures, installation procedures, and modification instructions.
  • Assembly of prototypes, with support from a mechanical technician.
  • Execution of validation testing, with support from the test engineer and technicians.
  • On-site customer support for installation and commissioning of first articles.
  • Development of engineering plans and estimation of activities for product development or problem resolution.
  • Tracking of progress, costs, open items, releases, and drawing revisions.
  • Weekly schedule planning based on priorities.
  • Technical expert support to the project team: co-design with suppliers, handling deviations and non-conformances, support to the Methods engineer group to sustain production, failure analysis and debugging. Activities may be carried out remotely from the Montreal office or on-site at the Plattsburgh manufacturing facility.
  • Participation in technical project presentations and reviews with customers.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (equivalent experience considered).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product design.
  • Registration with the Order of Engineers of Quebec is mandatory upon hiring if not a member;
  • Ability to analyze, understand, synthesize and explain complex technical problems to varied audiences and client-facing.
  • Proven experience in a formal project development environment;
  • Knowledge of GD&T, sheet metal, machining, materials and surface treatments.
  • Experience with Solidworks.
  • Versatility, structure, organization, rigor, autonomy and responsibility.
  • Good management of priorities, time and stress in a context of tight deadlines.
  • Experience in project or personnel management, an asset.
  • Experience in the field of public transportation or rail transportation, an asset.
  • Available to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Able to travel within the United States for business travel.
  • Valid driving license.

  • Solidworks exerience.

  • Strong ability to manage priorities, time, and stress in a tight-deadline environment.
  • Experience in project management or people management is an asset.
  • Experience in the public transit or rail transportation industry is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Ability to travel to the United States for business purposes.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Bilingual (English/French), both written and spoken. Knowledge of French is required for positions permanently based in Quebec to enable communication, as needed, with colleagues and suppliers in Quebec. French language training is offered to any permanent employee in Quebec who does not have sufficient knowledge of French.
