Role Summary

Are laboratory tests on building materials your passion or would you like to be trained in this? Are safety, quality and integrity of paramount importance to you? Then we would love to talk to you!

What are you going to do?

As a materials science laboratory technician, you work in a laboratory where daily research is carried out on (construction) materials. The work relates to safety and health aspects of mostly (secondary) raw materials for construction. As a materials science laboratory technician, you carry out tests on granular building materials in particular. Through this work you contribute to the safe (re)use of these materials. Examples of tests are:

Grain distribution. By sieving the granulate you determine whether the particle size distribution of the sample meets the requirements, so that a stable gasket is obtained when used as a foundation.

Compound. The broken rubble must contain at least a certain amount of clean rubble and preferably no glass, wood, etc. You visually sort the samples by type of material and check whether the requirements are met.

Asbestos research. By visual examination you can determine whether any materials suspected of asbestos are still present in the sample. Materials that are reused must of course be free of asbestos.

Other tests include the Los Angeles test, CBR value and gain, density.

Requirements

  • To be well prepared as a materials science laboratory technician, you must have at least MBO work and thinking level and preferably a materials science or material science education.
  • In addition, you are physically healthy, because you will regularly have to lift heavy monsters (about 15 kg). You are meticulous and have basic computer skills. Safety, quality and integrity are non-negotiable for you.
