Role Summary
The objective of the job description and responsibilities presented below is to describe all operational responsibilities of the Laboratory Director for the Oil, Gas and Chemicals (OGC) business sector of SGS Canada. The Laboratory Manager will be directly responsible for one or more SGS working groups at various sites, in addition to other tasks assigned by the Regional Director. The overall objective is to ensure that the Laboratory Director works closely with coordinators and technicians so that all operations under his direction operate at optimal levels in terms of health, safety, environment and quality at work. Each location must add value to the Company's business activities by achieving specific financial results and strategic value. Overall operational efficiency
- Health Safety
Understands, communicates and achieves Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) objectives established by SGS.
Ensures that systems, processes and behaviors are in place to achieve expected HSE performance levels.
Conduct investigations and root cause analysis with the collaboration of coordinators and laboratory staff following unforeseen events (health and safety or operational incidents, near misses, customer complaints).
Operations
Supports laboratory coordinators and staff to resolve performance or operational issues.
Develops appropriate work schedules.
Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance plan for laboratory equipment and monitors its performance and repairs.
Prepares and supports internal SMS operational procedures.
Communicates regularly with the entire team through weekly and monthly meetings which include topics related to Health and Safety (incidents, lessons learned, Tech Talks, Safe Talks, audit results, etc.), Quality (audit results, training status, change management, etc.), Operations (new processes, ASTM updates, improvements, 5S & cleanliness of workplaces, continuous improvement projects, etc.)
Quality
Ensures that laboratory coordinators and staff follow and maintain the SGS quality system in place (ISO).
Regularly reviews operating records and key quality data such as checks and calibrations (calibrations).
Prepares and monitors internal change management (MOC).
Work with the highest ethical standards and according to the SGS Code of Integrity.
Leadership Recognition
Provide technical advice to coordinators and laboratory staff.
Carry out annual and semi-annual performance reviews of your team.
Motivate coordinators and laboratory staff to achieve objectives correctly and safely by collaborating with each other and other sites as required.
Commercial/Business Questions
Identify high-risk activities or situations to avoid that could have harmful impacts on SGS (injuries, contamination, reputation).
Develop winning solutions that maximize the value of services offered to customers while contributing to the success of SGS.
Minimize operational costs while ensuring the quality of services expected from customers.
Customer relations
Knows the key points of contact for major customers and the different hierarchical levels of the organization.
Communicates with customers to assess their level of satisfaction.
Business development
Participates in the development of new business opportunities with the management teams of current clients.
Supports business development efforts with new clients by: identifying prospects through industry contacts, participating in sales team calls and preparatory meetings, visiting prospects' locations, and participating in scoping and proposing projects supporting information requests.
Organizational support
Participate in management team meetings.
Work closely with the Human Resources and Operational Integrity departments.
Respect the highest ethical standards, in accordance with the SGS Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct.
Participate, support and contribute to technical committees related to commercial activities (for example: CAN-CGSB, ASTM and others).
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry required.
- Member of the Order of Professional Chemists. (or be eligible)
- Knowledge of analytical chemistry and laboratory operations.
- Experience in instrumentation will be an asset.
- Experience: minimum 5 years of management experience in the field of Oil, gas and chemicals or in a related industry.
Work Schedule: This position is primarily a day position. However, as the laboratory is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the incumbent will be required to demonstrate flexibility and remain available on occasion to support operations and manage urgent situations outside of normal working hours, including evenings and weekends.
