Responsibilities

This position is responsible for technical proficiency, work coordination and scheduling for the completion of laboratory and pilot plant research programs. The incumbent is responsible for client relations and communications and ensuring compliance with client requirements for project success.

He ensures that the work meets established quality standards and company procedures. The incumbent is responsible for establishing and controlling project budgets and issuing project billing invoices. The incumbent is responsible for health and safety, environment, productivity and quality priorities, ensuring that all of these issues are addressed and optimized.

This job description applies to Senior Metallurgists/Project Managers in the technical groups of Mineral Processing (Crushing and Flotation), Gold Processing and Hydrometallurgy.

  • Establishes methods and procedures to complete assigned work schedules and coordinates work activities with other project managers, metallurgists/engineers and technical personnel.
  • Establish and understand the client's needs and objectives for a successful project or campaign.
  • Prepare technical and financial project proposals.
  • Carry out all the planning, scheduling and coordination necessary for the execution of a project or campaign.
  • Implement project management methodologies for planning and controlling a project or pilot plant campaigns.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, peers and subordinates involved in each program.
  • Prepare draft and final technical reports, as required.
  • Monitor project budgets and prepare project billing information for invoicing (if necessary).
  • Coordinate and supervise the installation of machines and equipment for laboratory and pilot plant circuits,
  • Perform planning and coordination of pilot plant projects, including risk assessments, technical protocols, sample planning and technical training of technicians.
  • Examine all equipment for health and safety standards
  • Train staff on job duties, safety procedures and company policies.
  • Foster a team environment among staff.
  • Ensure staff training needs are met and maintain a motivated workforce.
  • Sets goals and reviews job performance and training needs of employees.
  • Constructively resolve work issues where they arise and recommend work actions to improve productivity and quality of results.
  • Comply with all health, safety and environmental policies and regulations at all times.
  • Some off-site travel for projects and extended on-site/off-site hours will be required from time to time.
  • Opportunity to travel to other SGS metallurgical laboratories in Canada or abroad on short-term or longer-term assignments as part of a strategic initiative.
  • May be assigned and coordinate special or ad hoc projects as needed.

Requirements

  • University bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, mining engineering, materials engineering or in a related or equivalent scientific discipline.
  • 8-10 years of previous work experience in a minerals-related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Previous experience in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy or gold mining, including flowsheet, development, bench-scale testing and pilot plant programs.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Previous experience in a consulting or plant operations role would be an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience supervising technical teams.
  • Experience with financial and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates above average verbal and written communication skills, including grammar and composition.
  • Demonstrates the ability to write complex technical reports.
  • The ability to manage technical staff and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment is essential.
  • Must be motivated and have the ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently.
  • Candidates must be proficient in the use of various types of computer and business software, as well as information management applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Extended hours may be required from time to time.
