TikTok is seeking an Algorithm Assurance Technical Specialist to drive the technical assurance of our content recommendation and AI systems, ensuring they operate safely, fairly, and in compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks such as the DSA, GDPR, ISO, OSA, etc. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, policy, and governance - translating regulatory obligations into concrete algorithmic controls and providing expert input into regulatory engagement.

Content Assurance

  • Lead the design and implementation of algorithmic assurance frameworks for content recommendation and distribution systems.
  • Evaluate content system behavior including reach, diversity, amplification patterns, and edge-case performance.
  • Build automated monitoring and audit tooling to continuously validate that content algorithms perform within defined safety and quality bounds.

AI System Assurance

  • Establish and maintain a model and algorithm governance lifecycle - from design review and pre-deployment testing to post-deployment monitoring and incident response.
  • Develop and enforce standards for algorithmic transparency, explainability, and fairness across AI systems, including large-scale recommendation models and generative AI components.
  • Design and execute systematic risk assessments for AI systems in production.
  • Partner with ML engineering teams to embed assurance controls directly into model training, evaluation, and serving infrastructure.
  • Lead incident classification and response for algorithmic failures or undesired emergent behaviors.

Regulatory Input & Compliance

  • Translate regulatory requirements into actionable engineering specifications, test plans, and evidence artifacts.
  • Provide expert algorithmic input and recommendations to Legal, Public Policy, and Government Relations teams for regulatory engagement, consultations, and responses to supervisory authority inquiries.
  • Represent the organization in technical discussions with regulators, auditors, and industry bodies on algorithmic assurance topics.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Mentor the team of algorithm assurance engineers and analysts.
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, Legal, and Policy stakeholders to align assurance priorities with business and compliance objectives.
  • Drive the development of internal assurance standards, playbooks, and reusable tooling that scale across products and geographies.
  • Establish and chair an algorithm review board or equivalent governance forum for high-risk algorithm changes.

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of recommendation systems, ranking algorithms, and content distribution pipelines at scale.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and data analysis; experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and experimentation platforms.
  • Solid understanding and practical experience in Global regulations (e.g., DSA, OSA, GDPR, AI Governance Act), including practical experience in their application.
  • Proven track record in successfully developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive compliance programs at scale with experience engaging directly with regulators, external auditors, or supervisory bodies on algorithmic or AI compliance matters.
  • Strong foundational understanding of leading cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) and robust control environments.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, coupled with the ability to translate complex legal and technical concepts into clear, actionable advice for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, effectively manage multiple competing priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Computer Science, Information Security, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) roles, with a demonstrable strong focus on cybersecurity and IT compliance.
  • Industry experience in technology or social media.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as CISA, CISM, CRISC, CISSP, or CIPP/E.
